2009-10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Less than two weeks after missing the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season, the Buccaneers franchise fired both Head Coach John Gruden and GM Bruce Allen. The next day, the recently promoted Defensive Coordinator Raheem Morris was promoted to Head Coach and Mark Dominik was announced as the new Bucs GM.
The team decided to release a host of players to include both QB’s Jeff Garcia and Brian Griese and RB Warrick Dunn as well as receivers Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard. They resigned QB Luke McCown, RB Derrick Ward and LB Angelo Crowell. In the draft, the Bucs selected Kansas State QB Josh Freeman in the first round (the 17th overall pick) and Texas DT Roy Miller in the 3rd round. The Bucs also traded for TE Kellen Winslow Jr.
Look for Coach Morris to bring the best out of his players and challenge every position for the starting job. The team will need season ticket holders to help motivate their team to get back to the NFC Championships.
In the off-season Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t make too many moves from last year. This off-season will be known more for the guys they let go than the guys they went out to get. The offensive line was struggling last season so the team let go of guards Cosey Coleman and Matt O’Dwyer. They also let defensive backfield mainstays Mario Edwards and Dwight Smith hit the road. The team is still trying to get younger each year and grow more into the image of what head coach John Gruden wants to see.
The team did make some key pickups this year though. They went out and got tight end Anthony Becht who was a very solid option in the passing game for the New York Jets. He is also an above average run blocking tight end. The Bucs also signed defensive tackle Chris Hovan, who was formerly with the Minnesota Vikings. While there, he never lived up to the hype that surrounded him when he came out of college. At one point during the season he was actually benched and never got a chance to come back in after that. The Bucs are hoping that a change of scenery is all that Hovan needs to become a force on the line that they needed. If he was able to line up and do what he’s supposed to do, then they would be one of the best defensive lines in the NFL.
In the draft, the Buccaneers got the workhorse they needed in the backfield. With the fifth pick they selected Carnell “Cadillac” Williams from Auburn University. Williams should be able to give them that home run hitter in the backfield that the team hadn’t had since they let go of Warrick Dunn a few years back, but no matter how great a talent a team might have a running back, they still need a good offensive line to block for him.
The Tampa Bay offense has been sputtering for quite a while now. The team tried to bring in Charlie Garner to help out the running game, but he wasn’t able to do much in his role with the team. With some improved play from the offensive line the running game should flourish with Williams. The passing game has also been so-so. Quarterback Brian Griese has never been known for making good decisions on the fly, in spite of having all the physical tools. The only other real option the team has behind Griese is young gunslinger Chris Simms, who is smart, but lacks the physical gifts.
The Tampa defense slipped a little bit last year. It showed that they missed their guy in controlling the secondary, strong safety John Lynch. The secondary is now led by All-World corner Ronde Barber. The team uses him for everything from blitzing, to coverage to manning the running back to spying quick quarterback to getting water for everyone. He and the classiest player in the NFL, linebacker Derrick Brooks, are the reason that this defense is one to still be reckoned with.
Will the Bucs get out of the division basement this season was the big question in the 2007-08 season. Not much has been heard since their 2005 wild card run, and Tampa bay will try to regain that glory in 07/08. Jeff Garcia has proven that he cannot lead mediocre talent, and critics think he got lucky last year in Philly. Fans looking to buy tickets can expect Tampa to make serious improvements, but its key players will remain inconsistent coming into the season. Their defense is looking a bit old as well. Their offensive players are shaping up with Jeremy Stevens and Alex Smith, but the OL remains weak. They also lost emerging star Dewayne White to the Lions. Ticket buyers can definitely expect improvement this season. There’s nowhere to go but up. If you are looking for Tampa Bay Buccaneers tickets for this exciting season, you are definitely in the right place.
Winners of the 2007 NFC South Championship, the Buccaneers looked to improve on that and get back to the Super Bowl glory days of the 2002 Season. The franchise began by resigning Head Coach John Gruden as well as GM Bruce Allen. Both were signed through the 2011 season. The controversy with QB Jake Plummer was settled and Plummer received a $3.5 million settlement and promptly retired. The Bucs then signed key free agents Warrick Dunn and Brian Griese.
After being named as Starting QB, Jeff Garcia went out and lost the first game of the season prompting Coach Gruden to bench him in favor of Brian Griese. Griese would lead the team on a string of 3 victories. Garcia regained the starting position in week 6 and took the Bucs on a 6-1 record, good for 1st place in the NFC South and they were still undefeated at home.
A Monday Night game in December would prove to be the breaking point for the team as they were humiliated by the Carolina Panthers 38-23, dashing their hopes for a division title. Not soon after, Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin announced to the team that he was leaving the organization to work with his son Lane at the University of Tennessee.
A little over two weeks after the team failed to make the playoffs, finishing 9-7, the franchise fired both Head Coach John Gruden and GM Bruce Allen.
